The Kunsthalle (the Art Gallery)

Founded in 1868 by Alfred Lichtwark, the Kunsthalle is one of the most important art galleries of Europe. Its art collection includes precious 19th- and 20th-century works representing the German Romantic school.

The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (the Museum of Art and Crafts)

Founded in 1877 by Justus Brinckmann, it houses the most significant collections of ancient artifacts in Germany. The museum is also famous for the exhibits representing Asian art and Jugendstil (Art Nouveau).

The Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte (the Museum of Hamburg History)

The year 1839 is considered to be the beginning of the museum. Initially it was a collection of local antiquities. The museum tells its visitors about the history of Hamburg and demonstrates numerous exhibits (clothes, parts of old buildings, models of ships, etc.).

The Museum für Völkerkunde (the Museum of Ethnology)

Founded in 1878, the museum houses impressive collections which help to gain an insight into this branch of knowledge.

The Altonaer Museum

The Altonaer Museum was opened in 1863. It specializes in north German subjects. Particular attention is paid to Schleswig-Holstein. The exhibits include Germany's largest collection of old ships' figureheads.

The Helms Museum

The Helms Museum is located in the Harburg district, it is a local museum dedicated to the part of Hamburg south of the Elbe. The museum also provides information on the prehistory and early history of the region.

The Hamburg Staatsoper (the Hamburg State Opera House)

Dating from 1678, it is one of the most significant opera houses of Germany. The classical and contemporary works staged here will certainly please an opera connoisseur.

The Deutsche Schauspielhaus (the German Theatre)

It is one of the leading theatres of Germany. It was opened on the 15th of September 1900. The theatre was especially popular in 1955 – 1963, thanks to the fact that Gustaf Gründgens directed and performed there.

The Thalia Theatre

Founded in 1843, it is one of the three national theatres of Hamburg. It is quite popular. The repertoire of the theatre includes about 20 plays.

There are also many other theatres in Hamburg: the Piccolo-Theater, the Hansa-Theater, the Ohnsorg-Theater, the Sankt Pauli-Theater, the English Theatre, the Imperial Theater, the Monsun Theater, the Theater Imago, the Theater für Kinder and many others.
